Selectable flash is a practical choice

Low-glow and no-glow options let you choose a different compromise for each site. One setting may be preferable when concealing illumination matters; another may be attractive when you need the manufacturer longer rated illumination reach. The advertised ranges do not tell us how sharply a moving animal will appear.

Make the decision with comparable samples rather than assumed superiority. Record the setting, subject distance, and movement. Check whether close grass or branches are dominating exposure. A night photo can be bright yet contain little useful detail on the animal.

The camera still needs careful framing. Walking along the intended route after dark gives better evidence than looking only at a daytime aiming screen.

Live viewing has requirements and limits

Live View is the feature that deserves the closest cost and power review. Tactacam support currently lists a Pro Plan, a separate Live View add-on, compatible app software, strong cellular signal, and healthy power. The reviewed support page lists the add-on at $6 monthly or $72 annually per camera, in addition to the required plan.

Sessions begin at up to two minutes, can extend to four minutes total, and then require a short cooldown. Uploads pause during a live session. These are important differences from treating the camera as an uninterrupted surveillance stream.

Before buying, write down the task: a brief check of a clearing, verifying a scene, or watching continuously. The first two may fit. The third deserves another solution. Also note that current support lists live viewing for several other REVEAL models, so it is not a sufficient reason by itself to choose Ultra over every less expensive REVEAL.

Active GPS, storage, and hardware workflow

Active GPS is intended to help when the camera is moved, and Tactacam describes backup-powered location behavior. Treat it as an aid to recovery, not a guarantee against theft. Location reporting still has operational dependencies, and a lock or discreet installation addresses a different part of the problem.

Internal storage reduces dependence on a removable card for basic operation. The optional card gives you another workflow, but compatibility matters. The manual calls for a Class 10 U3 card of 16GB or 32GB. Use the current exact-model instructions instead of a general camera-card rule.

The 2-inch LCD offers a local interface when setting up the camera. During activation, practice the operations you may need in the field: checking framing, reviewing status, and distinguishing captured files from those successfully delivered to the account.

Power and coverage should decide the installation

12 AA batteries and a 12V input provide several possible arrangements, but we have not established runtime. Repeated video requests or streaming should lead to a deliberate power plan, not an assumption that the camera will last a season. Check compatibility, connector protection, and accessory instructions.

For remote winter use, test the chosen setup during actual cold conditions if possible. Avoid extrapolating a warm-weather battery percentage into a fixed number of winter months. Log activity and servicing so you can make a site-specific decision.

Automatic carrier selection still needs a viable network at the mounting point. Confirm the supported country and hardware before any Canadian purchase. A phone plan from a particular carrier does not establish which network the camera can use, and the camera service is separate from your personal phone service.

What owners report: useful anecdotes, not reliability rates

In an Ultra-specific Reddit report, an owner said images were visible locally but did not consistently reach the app while using internal memory. The post does not establish a diagnosis. It does illustrate why capture and delivery should be checked separately.

A REVEAL-versus-EDGE discussion includes a positive initial Ultra comment alongside longer experience with other REVEAL generations. Initial satisfaction is useful context, but it is not a season-long Ultra test.

Another Ultra owner asked about exhausting a photo allowance in one day. Without settings and site data, that cannot be assigned to hardware failure. Check multishot, delay, vegetation, and activity before deciding what needs to change. We do not infer a failure percentage from these discussions.

Pros, compromises, and who should pay more

Reasons to consider Ultra

  • Selectable flash gives a meaningful site-by-site illumination choice.
  • Internal storage and an optional card support different retrieval preferences.
  • Active GPS adds a location function beyond basic manual map marking.

Compromises to budget for

  • Live viewing adds service and power requirements.
  • Advanced features need actual coverage and a compatible account.
  • Premium hardware does not establish superior night detail without comparable samples.

The total ownership cost should include camera, service, viewing add-on if used, approved power, mounting, and replacement consumables. Compare that total with the Moultrie EDGE 4 and budget FLEX-M2. A standard SD camera remains sensible if you check the site regularly and do not need remote delivery.

Choose Ultra when its particular combination solves a documented need. For routine photo scouting, spend time proving coverage and image usefulness before spending more on the camera.

Straight answers

Frequently asked questions

Does REVEAL Ultra live video cost extra?

The current Tactacam support page lists an active Pro Plan plus a Live View add-on at $6 monthly or $72 annually per camera. Confirm the current account terms before purchase. Hardware support alone does not include the service, and strong cellular reception and sufficient power are also required.

Can the REVEAL Ultra stream continuously?

The reviewed support instructions describe sessions of up to two minutes, extendable to four minutes total, followed by a cooldown. That is not uninterrupted surveillance. Use it for short remote checks, and evaluate a different system if your requirement is continuous video recording or a persistent live stream.

Does the REVEAL Ultra need an SD card?

The Ultra lists 16GB of internal storage and an optional SD card slot. Its manual specifies Class 10 U3 cards of 16GB or 32GB. Follow the exact current manual and test your retrieval process before deployment, especially if preserving local files is central to your workflow.

Is the REVEAL Ultra no-glow?

The Ultra offers selectable low-glow and no-glow illumination. Tactacam advertises 96 feet of flash range in low-glow and 80 feet in no-glow. Those are illumination claims, not guaranteed detailed identification distances. Compare samples at realistic distances and choose the mode that fits the site.

Will Active GPS stop someone stealing the Ultra?

Active GPS is a location and movement-reporting feature, not a physical theft barrier or guaranteed recovery service. Consider mounting, a suitable lock, concealment, and access risk separately. Learn the feature conditions in the current documentation, including how reporting behaves after the camera is switched off or loses its main power.

Why does my Ultra capture photos but not send them?

Capture and cellular delivery are different steps. Check the plan allowance, power, signal, transmission settings, app status, and whether a live session is pausing uploads. Preserve timestamps and screenshots, then contact support if the problem persists. A public owner report cannot determine the cause on your particular unit.
